Safe opening Jávea, for the safe nobody can get into
A wardrobe safe in a villa that refuses the code it has always taken, a guest safe left locked in a holiday let, or the takings safe of a restaurant at the port that went dark overnight. Opened through the maker’s own way in whenever there is one, and left working.
The safes of Xàbia, by who owns them
Three quite different jobs, with different papers to show.
-
Holiday lets
The council counted 4,226 registered tourist dwellings in January 2026, and many lets keep a small safe for guests. The most common call: a code set on the first day of a stay and lost on the last. What to do when a guest has gone home.
-
Villas used part of the year
More than half the homes in Xàbia are not a main residence. A safe opened once a year can arrive at Easter with flat batteries, or with nobody sure of the code.
-
Shops and restaurants
The day’s takings behind a keypad. When it fails before opening time it is a business problem, handled with the rest of the locks of a shop or restaurant.
Getting into a safe: the order of work
The drill is the last tool, not the first. Most safes in villas and lets are electronic, and their makers leave a way in for a lost code.

Photos by WhatsApp
The front with the keypad or dial, and any label with the make and model, often inside the door frame.
-
Ownership, then price
Papers that show the safe is yours to open, and the price once the safe has been seen, before any work.
-
The maker’s route in
Override key, master code or new electronics, tried before anything else.
-
One hole if it must be
Drilled at a single point, plugged, and a new lock fitted so the safe is usable.
A new safe, bolted into a villa wall or floor
A safe that is not fixed down is a heavy box with a handle. In a villa it goes into a wall or the floor slab, away from pipes and cables; in an old town house the thick walls are often a better anchor than a modern partition. It is often fitted on the same visit as a new cylinder on the front door after a break-in, or alongside the other locks of a villa that are covered on the villa page.
For a holiday let, a guest safe with a master code that only the owner or manager holds saves the next call-out. Hosts will find the rest of the lock work for a let on the holiday rental page. To ask for a new safe, say what it needs to hold on the contact page.
Codes, batteries and papers
The safe beeps and flashes but the handle will not turn. Is it broken?
Often it is only the batteries. A weak set can still light the keypad but not drive the motor that pulls the bolts back. Many safes have a battery compartment or an outside contact for exactly this; try fresh batteries before anything else.
What do you need to see before opening a safe in a holiday villa?
That the property, and so the safe, is the owner’s: the deeds or the tourist licence in the owner’s name, or the manager’s written authorisation from the owner. Without that, the safe stays shut.
Will the safe still work after it has been opened?
When it opens through the maker’s override or by replacing the electronics, yes. When it has to be drilled, the hole is made at one point and plugged, and a new lock is fitted so the safe can be used again.
Can a safe be fixed into a villa wall built of block?
Usually, with fixings chosen for the wall once it has been seen, or into the floor slab instead. A safe that is not fixed down can be carried out to a car by two people.
A safe that will not take the code you know?
Send a photo of the front on WhatsApp, with the keypad or dial in view and any maker’s label.
