A few minutes’ walk away, the **municipal market**, built in 1946, keeps its own hours in the old town. For the shops round the church and the market, Thursday morning is the busiest trading of the week. It is also the worst time to have a shutter that will not go up, or to book a locksmith to change a lock. ## Book around Thursday morning For planned work (a new cylinder after a member of staff leaves, a shop door that no longer catches, a back door onto a lane that has never had a proper lock), choose: - **Any other weekday**, before opening or after closing, or - **Thursday afternoon**, once the stalls have packed up. The van can then park close to the shop, the tools come in without threading through the stalls, and the shop is never open with its door in pieces. ## When it fails on a Thursday anyway A shutter that will not unlock at 8 o’clock on market day cannot wait. Ring, say that it is a market morning and which street, and you will hear an honest estimate of the time it takes to reach you. The locksmith may need to park outside the market streets and walk in with the tools, which is normal in the old town on any day. While you wait, do not force the shutter key or the padlock: a key snapped in a shutter lock turns a short job into a longer one. ## The locks of an old-town shop Shops in the historic centre often occupy old houses, so the locks are a mix: - **Roller shutters** with a central lock or side padlocks. - **Old wooden doors** behind them, sometimes with an iron gate as well.
